You are cordially invited to participate in the European Seafloor Observatory NETwork (ESONET) workshop about Virtual Institute of Scientific users of deep-Sea Observatories (VISO), to be held on 11-12 June 2009 in Tromsø, Norway. You can find the draft agenda by clicking on the link VISO_agenda
This lovely city, known as the “Gateway to the Arctic” and for spectacular Northern Lights has a colorful Arctic history. It is surrounded by the dramatic Lyngen Alps, fjords and many small islands.
ESONET and the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observation (EMSO) work together for long-term ocean monitoring in European Seas from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea in order to understand processes driven by global climate change. The interaction between the geosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere, including natural hazards is of particular interest. While ESONET represents an organization capable of implementing and operating multidisciplinary demonstration missions, EMSO is responsible for the full implementation of observatories.
The topics of the workshop are:
- Requirements for a Virtual Institute
- Needs and expectations as seen from academia
- Needs and expectations as seen from industry
- Potential collaboration between academia and industry
- Practical approach and its strategy to make VISO a permanent and successful structure
Overview talks will be given by invited speakers to present “state-of-the art” knowledge. There will be no parallel sessions. Scientific and technological presentations will be supplemented by posters. Industry representatives are invited to present their view of ocean observatory research and data storage, distribution and analysis. It is planned to produce a document as a base to establish a virtual institute, and supplemented workshop proceedings of the oral and poster presentations.
We kindly request you to inform us of your participation before March 1st, and to confirm it by completing the enclosed form and to return it before May 1st.
We look forward to meeting you in Tromsø,
Bénédicte Ferré and Jürgen Mienert
